A New Zealander living in Thailand Two people have been arrested over the death of Stephen Miller, but Thai police said the person who carried out the killing was still at large. Several motives for murdering the former Waikanae man have been suggested in Thailand's media, including the possibility it was related to a previous conviction for importing steroids.
Mr Miller, 39, was killed last Thursday morning while
travelling to a gym in the resort city of Pattaya, Police identified Mr Miller from a New Zealand drivers' licence that he was carrying. A Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman said Thai police had arrested a man and a woman. A third person, believed to have carried out the shooting, was being sought. Family members have flown to Thailand but it was not known when Mr Miller's body would be returned to New Zealand. The Millers have asked for their privacy to be respected in the meantime. A Kiwi policeman based at the New Zealand embassy in Bangkok had met police officers investigating the killing. The Pattaya City News said witnesses saw two men on a motorbike pull up next to Mr Miller before the passenger, who was wearing a hooded jacket, shot him in the head. It reported Mr Miller had four Thai wives and that he had been embroiled in a court dispute with one of them over property ownership. The resort town newspaper said Mr Miller also had a previous conviction for illegally taking steroids into New Zealand. Police were investigating whether the murder was related to that case, to Mr Miller's links with the property market, or the court case with his fourth wife, whom police have yet to identify, its website reported. Thai police could not be contacted for comment. 2 5 - 0 4 - 2 0 0 6 TOP STORY: Girlfriend hired hitman
Hawkes Bay Today A former Hawke's Bay man shot dead in Thailand last week was executed by hitmen on the orders of his former girlfriend, say Thai police. Stephen Miller was killed while riding his motorbike to the gym in the Thai city of Pattaya, about 150km south of Bangkok, on Thursday. An initial report said he had been shot while golfing. The 39-year-old's former girlfriend, Jintina Weechachai, has been arrested in connection with his murder. Police reports made available yesterday to Thai media outlined a confession from Ms Weechachai. The Thai woman is said to have admitted she hired two gunmen because she feared Mr Miller was going to leave her. In her statement she said they dated for about five months but Mr Miller did not treat her well. She described him as a "butterfly" (promiscuous) and said he had tried to take back gifts he had given her, including a car and land. A Thai acquaintance, who did not want to be identified, said Mr Miller had bought some land with Ms Weechachai and that they had planned to build a house on it. The man said Mr Miller intended to amend his will so the house would go to his surviving partner in the event of his death. It is not known if that happened before his murder. Another acquaintance of the dead man said the execution happened not long after Mr Miller transferred the last of his cash and assets from New Zealand to Thailand. Police reports say Ms Weechachai said she personally knew the gunmen she hired for the fatal hit. They were Woratip Gachatwong, 24 - who has been arrested - and Yeungyut Jurapong, 25, who is still on the run. Ms Weechachai's description of Mr Miller as an uncaring boyfriend is at odds with the way former friends from New Zealand remember him. Mr Miller was a well-known bodybuilder at the Sparta Health and Fitness Centre in Napier before leaving for Thailand several years ago. He is understood to have been living in Thailand for about five years, and last visited the centre in 2002. He also kept in regular contact with several other members and childhood friends, one of whom received an e-mail from Mr Miller about an hour before he was killed. Mr Miller's ex-wife Megan has flown to Thailand with some of Mr Miller's family. Despite their separation, friends say the pair had remained close and Ms Miller had visited Mr Miller in Thailand for holidays. They did not have any children together. Thai media reported that Mr Miller was shot in the head at close range, the bullet entering at the base of his ear. His body was found on the ground near his motorbike which was lying on its side with a bag containing identification details, gym membership and some boxing equipment. Police formally identified him from a New Zealand driver's licence. Mr Miller is understood to have continued his bodybuilding in Thailand and also pursued Thai kickboxing, which he was "very passionate about". It is understood a ceremony will be held in Thailand today and Mr Miller's ashes will be returned to New Zealand. 2 6 - 0 4 - 2 0 0 6 "WIFE" OF NZ MURDER VICTIM ARRESTED IN THAILAND
New Zealand Press Association A woman who claims she was married to New Zealand bodybuilder Stephen Miller has been charged with conspiring to kill him in Thailand. Mr Miller, a 39-year-old businessman who worked in real estate in the resort city of Pattaya, 147km south of Bangkok, was travelling to his gym on a motor scooter on Thursday morning when he was shot. The Pattaya City News reported that Khun Gintana had been charged with conspiracy to murder. She claimed to be one of Mr Miller's wives, but the newspaper said a marriage certificate was never signed. Her alleged accomplice, Khun Walatit, 24, was already in custody, also charged with conspiracy to murder. Regional commander police Lieutenant General Jongrak told a press conference that the alleged gunman, Gintana's boyfriend Khun Yiamwoot, 25, was still at large but was thought to be in the southern Sonkla province of Thailand and a warrant issued for his arrest. Gintana was involved in an illegal steroid export business, with the money from orders being sent to her bank account, the newspaper reported. ``Mr Miller confronted her just before the murder and a physical altercation took place as he demanded she hand over the money from the steroid sales.'' Gintana and her boyfriend then formulated a plan to kill him and keep the money, the newspaper reported. Mr Miller's New Zealand family, including his former wife Megan, attended the press conference. He spent time living in Napier, while his parents live in Waikanae, north of Wellington. His family said his ashes would be brought back to New Zealand, after a funeral in Thailand, and a memorial service would possibly be held in Napier. |
