TRIBUTES have been paid to 28-year-old bodybuilder and boxer Faye Edwards who
was found hanged at her home in Cleator Moor on Monday.
News of her death has devastated all those who trained with her at local gyms,
and especially at Whitehaven’s Powerhouse Gym.
Owner Ian Chambers said mum-of-one Faye, was destined for great things.
He said: “I can’t believe it. I can’t put it into words. Everyone at the gym is
devastated.”
Faye hit the headlines aged 21 as Cumbria’s only woman boxer. She had also
turned her attention to bodybuilding and was making fantastic achievements.
Mr Chambers said: “She started training here last January and competed in May –
and came third in the north west body championships.
She qualified for the novice British figure class."
“From when she came here in January she had altered her physique so much – she
was eating six or seven meals a day and doing everything we asked of her –
people didn’t recognise her.
I said she would win the British championships for her class. It’s such a
shame.”
Faye had recently moved to train at Wath Brow Hornets because it was closer for
her. She lived in Clayton Avenue in Cleator Moor and had a five-year-old
daughter.
Mr Chambers has started a collection at the gym for her daughter.
He said Faye’s stepfather had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and she had
taken that badly. Her brother is a soldier in Iraq.
Friend Alex Cook, now a professional fighter, used to train with Faye at the
Powerhouse Gym.
He said: “She had a passion for training. Her and Ian actually made the journey
to Reading to support me when I fought for the FX3 British title.
She was always very light-hearted with an ability to talk to anyone.
When I lost, she came up and give me a big hug and said ‘hard luck’, which was
just the kind of attitude she had. ‘Dust yourself off and try again next time’.
That’s how she came across to me.
“I was obviously shocked when I heard the news. I never thought she would be
someone to go that way.”
An inquest has been opened and adjourned. There are no suspicious circumstances.

On the Rhodes to fame and fortune as an 18-30 model
South Manchester Reporter
2nd May 2002
SUN, sea, sand, and sexy photo shoots are what finalist Leah-Faye Edwards
is hoping for if she wins the next round of the Club 18-30s annual model competition.
The trainee dancer is dreaming of her big break, having beaten off competition from
hundreds of other wannabes to get this far.
And if she wins, Leah-Faye will be whisked off to the famous party resort of Faliraki, on the
Greek island of Rhodes, to star in the raunchy holiday company’s 2003 brochure. The wild
resort was made infamous by the ITV series Club Reps, which exposed the saucy behaviour of
the 18-30s holiday-goers and employees.
Leah-Faye, 18, has always been keen to try her luck at modelling and would be happy to
leave her Chorlton home to dabble with a career on the catwalk.
She said: “If I am one of the lucky winners I’m sure it will be hard work but a great
experience and who knows what it may lead to?” Club 18-30 holidays are renowned for being
one big party, with lots of drinking and clubbing, as well as bawdy songs and games.

Mystery over why Faye killed herself
News & Star
08/09/2006
THE heartbroken family of west Cumbrian bodybuilder and boxer Faye Edwards will
never know why she killed herself five months ago.
An inquest yesterday failed to shed any light on why she committed suicide by
hanging herself at her home in Cleator Moor on April 3, just two days before her
29th birthday.
Her mother Ann Edwards, said in her statement: “To this day I don’t know why she
did what she did. There is no reason. I have lost my first child and I don’t
know why.”
West Cumbria coroner John Taylor said Ms Edwards, who was a fitness instructor
at Wath Brow Hornets Club and had a five-year-old daughter, seemed as happy as
usual in the days before her death.
“She did not mention anything out of the ordinary or anything that would give
her mother cause for concern.”
Her brother Dean, a soldier who has just returned from Iraq, said the family had
not found out anything else since Ms Edwards’ death that would throw any light
on why she took her own life.
The family are currently mourning the death of Ms Edward’s stepfather and her
mother’s partner Thomas Coan, of Ennerdale Road, who died on Tuesday.
Ms Edwards became Cumbria’s only woman boxer when she was 21.
She had also turned her attention to bodybuilding and had qualified for the
novice British figure class.
Her mother said she was a popular girl who was loved by everyone.
“She was a wonderful daughter and a wonderful mother to her daughter.”
Ms Edwards lived in Clayton Avenue with her daughter Amaris McGrady.
Her family said when they last saw her, two days before she was found dead, she
was happy. But worried friends, relatives and work colleagues contacted her mum
when they couldn’t raise her.
Her mother went round to her house and found it locked, with the blinds closed.
She thought Ms Edwards had been celebrating her forthcoming birthday, but
returned to the house with Mr Coan after more anxious phone calls.
She managed to get in through a window.
Ms Edwards was found hanging barefoot from the loft hatch. Mr Taylor, who
recorded a verdict of suicide, said: “The death of Faye came as a great shock to
her mother and to her family. They have no idea why she did what she did.”
