The News Journal Three University of Delaware football players have been suspended from the team following their arrest early Sunday along with another UD student in connection with an armed-robbery home invasion of two other university students during which cocaine, marijuana and steroids were taken, Newark police said today. Police charged UD linebacker Demetrice Alexander, 20, running back Daniel Jones, 19, and defensive back Jeffrey Robinson, 21, and Tyrone Heggins, 22, all of Newark, with two counts each of first-degree robbery and unlawful imprisonment, first-degree burglary, wearing a disguise during a felony and conspiracy. Alexander also was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for keeping controlled substances and marijuana possession. Heggins was additionally charged with possession of a firearm during a felony. All four were committed to the Young Correctional Institution in lieu of bail. Bail information was unavailable. In a release this morning, Coach K.C. Keeler announced the immediate suspension of the three players. “People are innocent until proven guilty, but due to the severity of this situation, we are suspending these three immediately,” said Keeler. “If any of the three is found to be involved in this crime in any way, each will be terminated.” Newark police Sgt. Rick Williams said the incident occurred about 12:56 a.m. at the Park Place Apartments in the 600 block of Lehigh Road. Williams said the unidentified male victim, also a UD football player, heard a knock on the door shortly before 1, then heard someone trying to pry open the door. When he opened the door he was confronted by three masked men, one armed with a shotgun. Williams said the fourth suspect was waiting outside. During an altercation with the victim, masks were pulled from the faces of two suspects. The victim recognized both of them, Williams said. The victim continued to struggle with the men, who forced him to the ground and one of them pointed a shotgun at his head, according to police. The assailants forced the victim into his closet as a female victim entered the room. A gun also was pointed at her, and her cell phone was taken. After ransacking the apartment, the assailants fled with the illegal drugs, Williams said. He said the male victim suffered cuts but refused medical treatment. After interviewing the victims, police raided the defendants’ residences and arrested them. Cynthia Cummings, UD associate vice president for campus life, said the university is very concerned about the incident. "We must ensure that they pose no threat to members of the University community. Therefore, the Office of Judicial Affairs has taken the necessary steps to expel the students from the campus, according to procedures set forth in the Student Guide to University Policies," Cummings said. "This action will remain in effect until the charges are dismissed or until the students are acquitted of the charges." |
