2 3 - 0 2 - 2 0 0 6 Pond Near Farm Searched For Clues
The Tampa Tribune The search for clues in the Jan. 9 killing of strawberry grower Bruce White has turned to a small pond a short distance from his front door. Sheriff's divers on Wednesday began searching the pond near White's home at 6345 Yukon Road. Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter had no information on what, if anything, divers found. The search might continue today. Sheriff's Col. Gary Terry wouldn't say what divers were seeking, although a private detective hired by the victim's family has said White, 61, was shot twice by a high-powered rifle. The investigator, Brad Sparkman, couldn't be reached for comment. On Friday, sheriff's detectives arrested White's 35-year-old son, Michael, who lived on the same property south of Plant City, on an accusation that he stole more than $300,000 from a family checking account over a year. Michael White was being held Wednesday at the Falkenburg Road Jail with bail set at $117,000 on charges including possession of a controlled substance, first-degree grand theft, organized fraud, uttering a forged instrument, fraudulent use of personal information and two counts of possession of a short-barreled shotgun. The shotguns were not used in the killing, Terry said. The shotguns and anabolic steroids for which Michael White couldn't produce a prescription were found in a search of his home two days after his father's slaying. Michael White, who had a "diminished role" in the family strawberry business, is accused of stealing checks from the family checkbook, said Terry, commander of the sheriff's Department of Investigative Services. Family members knew there had been irregularities in the account but didn't realize the extent of the problem until investigators began looking around, he said. Michael White has not been cooperative in the slaying investigation, Terry said. Investigators are looking at several individuals in the killing. "I'm confident we'll solve the case," Terry said. This "was not a random act of violence." More than 100 people have been interviewed, and the investigation - including an examination of financial records - continues, Terry said. |
