Diaz's blood to be tested for steroids

WEST HARTFORD - Toxicology reports show that the suspended state trooper who murdered Newington Police Officer Ciara McDermott in her West Hartford home and then turned the gun on himself in late November was not on narcotics at the time of the killings. However, West Hartford Police Chief James Strillacci said Thursday his department would be sending blood samples from trooper Victor Diaz to an out-of-state lab for steroid testing.

"The labs in Connecticut do not do steroid testing so we are looking at sending a blood sample to Ohio," Strillacci said. "He was a bodybuilder and we wanted to have the testing done."

Winstrol-V

The police report into the investigation of McDermott's death indicated that West Hartford police found an empty bottle of Win-V, a nickname for Winestral Veca - [Of was het Winstrol-V? - red.], at the home of Diaz's brother Edwin. Win-V is an anabolic steroid used by bodybuilders.

Diaz had been living with Edwin at the time of McDermott's death. Police believe Diaz ambushed McDermott, firing off three shots to her head and torso in the living room of her West Hartford home before turning the gun on himself. Diaz had been suspended from the state police after a drunken driving arrest in March where he threatened Cromwell police officers. McDermott and Diaz had dated for about three years before his arrest but broke up shortly after.

The toxicology report issued Jan. 20 by the state's Chief Medical Examiner's Office said Diaz tested negative for opiates but tested positive for caffeine and ibuprofen, a pain reliever. The police report further said a prescription slip for Abilify, a drug used to treat Bi-Polar disorder and schizophrenia was found in the car Diaz used the day of the shootings. The report also said police found an empty bottle of a prescription antibiotic and an empty bottle of Trazodone, an anti-depressant, in the same basement bathroom trash bin where the empty bottle of Win-V was found. According to a Web site for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, anabolic steroids can cause extreme mood swings, violent behavior, paranoid jealousy and delusions.

Strillacci said he did not have an estimate on how long it would take for the results of the steroid testing to come back. "It is my understanding that these types of tests are complicated and it could take some time," Strillacci said.

Scientific research also shows that aggression and other psychiatric side effects may result from abuse of anabolic steroids. Many users report feeling good about themselves while on anabolic steroids, but researchers report that extreme mood swings also can occur, including manic-like symptoms leading to violence. Depression often is seen when the drugs are stopped and may contribute to dependence on anabolic steroids. Researchers report also that users may suffer from paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions, and impaired judgment stemming from feelings of invincibility.

Trooper in murder-suicide had no alcohol or drugs in system

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- A toxicology test found no traces of alcohol or drugs in the body of state Trooper Victor Diaz, who town police say killed his former girlfriend and himself in November.

Diaz, 37, shot Newington police Officer Ciara McDermott, 30, to death before turning the gun on himself at McDermott's home, police said.

Results of the test, performed by Toxicology Associates Inc. in Columbus, Ohio, came back this week, providing police with one of the final pieces that investigators were waiting for to close the case. The test checked for 13 types of steroids and other drugs.

Police Chief James Strillacci said the Ohio company did the steroid tests because the chief medical examiner's office and the state toxicology laboratory don't have the capability to check for steroids.

The other final piece of the investigation was Diaz's phone records, which police also recently received. Strillacci said Diaz called only his lawyer and his former troop commander on the day of the killings _ calls that investigators already knew about.

Police earlier this year released a 274-page investigation report of the Nov. 21 murder-suicide. Investigators said in the report that there was evidence that Diaz had been taking antidepressants and/or body building enhancers.

Authorities said they found an empty bottle of Abilify, a drug used to treat bipolar disorder, in Diaz's car. At his brother's home in Windsor, where Diaz had been living for several months, police also found an empty bottle of Trazadone, an antidepressant, and Winestral Veca, a synthetic growth hormone.

Diaz was serving a 60-day suspension from his job in connection with a drunken driving arrest at the time of his death. He was also facing new allegations of improperly using a statewide police data base to look up the license plate of a car parked in McDermott's driveway.
