Man, woman face indictment on steroid charges

An Atlantic County grand jury indicted an Egg Harbor Township bodybuilder and a Vineland woman on charges of selling steroids to undercover investigators, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jeffrey S. Blitz said Wednesday.

Victor Sternberg, 23, was indicted on charges of distribution of steroids. Danielle Marquez, 24, was indicted in charges of possession and distribution of steroids and cocaine. Assistant Prosecutor John Maher presented the case to the grand jury Wednesday morning, and the indictments were handed up to Judge James Isman.

Former Gov. Richard J. Codey's Executive Order 72 calls for a comprehensive state action to combat use of steroids by student athletes.

Blitz has directed his Narcotics Strike Force to expand its efforts to combat illegal anabolic steroids. “Using steroids is cheating, plain and simple,” Blitz said.

Unless a physician prescribes anabolic steroids, they are not only illegal, but they give the user an unfair advantage over other athletes, he said.

“Our high school athletes and college athletes should be able to compete for scholarships or enjoy the thrill of victory in competitive sports based on natural ability and training,” Blitz said.

Sternberg, a competitive bodybuilder, was employed as a doorman at a casino club in November when he allegedly sold two vials of steroids to an undercover investigator.

The investigator paid $400 for the steroids, which hasten muscle growth.

On Jan. 4, authorities arrested Sternberg at his home. He was released on a summons pending further proceedings.

Marquez allegedly sold illegal drugs to undercover investigators this summer at the Hamilton Mall. The total sales were $5,400.

In June, Marquez allegedly sold two vials of steroids and crack cocaine to an officer, and on July 7, she allegedly sold another two vials of steroids to the undercover officer. On July 25, she passed off a large bottle of anti-inflammatory medication [Wat kan dat nou geweest zijn? - red.] as steroids and sold it to the undercover, the prosecutor said. She is free pending further legal proceedings, Blitz said.

If convicted, Sternberg and Marquez each could face three to five years in prison.
