No badge for security guard

A BOUNCER caught with more than 1500 anabolic steroid tablets he bought near a Brunswick nightspot has been stripped of his security badge.

Police found the tablets on the back seat of Mohammed Abd Elhamid's car when he ran a red light heading home from work at Bridie O'Reilly's in August last year.

Abd Elhamid lost his battle to be reinstated as a licensed security guard in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal yesterday. The 26 year-old told the tribunal he thought the tablets, bought in the hotel car park from a man who had earlier been drinking at the bar, were vitamins.

He denied he planned to sell the tablets, claiming the whole quantity was for himself. "I know I made a mistake, but I honestly didn't know," he said. "I wanted to look good, I'm skinny and I wanted to put on weight."

The Meadow Heights man was found guilty of possessing a drug of dependence in Melbourne Magistrates' Court and placed on a community-based order after being caught with the tablets.

The tribunal heard Abd Elhamid had worked as a bouncer since 1999, after returning to Australia from Egypt, where he had lived since he was three.

VCAT senior member Robert Davis said bouncers were expected to help stop the drug trade around premises in which they worked.

Judge Davis ruled Abd Elhamid be suspended from holding a private security licence until December this year, when he may re-apply.
