0 1 - 1 1 - 2 0 0 5 Man sentenced for raping girlfriend
Defendant blames actions on use of steroids, alcohol
Thursday, December 1, 2005 OTTAWA - An Ottawa man was sentenced to 22 years in prison Wednesday for beating, raping and sodomizing his girlfriend with a broomstick. Michael Quiring, 22, of 2211 Spencer Place hung his head as LaSalle Circuit Court Judge H. Chris Ryan sentenced him 20 years in prison for criminal sexual assault, to which he pleaded guilty in December. He received an additional two years in prison for a felony drug possession charge. He must serve 17 years for assault and is eligible for day-for-day good time on the drug charge. Authorities say Quiring sodomized his 20-year-old girlfriend with a broomstick, beating her and raping her July 31, 2004. He was found mentally unfit to be sentenced in April and still takes medication for psychological problems, according to his attorney Ed Kulek. Kulek said Quiring took steroids, causing uncontrolled violent outbursts. The victim, Quiring's girlfriend of about four years, also supported him in a written statement, which said he acted differently when taking the drugs. Quiring, in his address to the court, said he would never intentionally harm his girlfriend. "What I did was absolutely terrible. I didn't realize the effect steroids had on me, and that alcohol made it worse," Quiring read from his written statement, without looking at the judge or the victim and her family. "She has always been my best friend. I will never take steroids again." Ryan said the steroid use did not justify the crime, because he took them voluntarily. Ryan said he could not give Quiring the maximum penalty of 30 years because he had no previous history of violence. State's Attorney Joe Hettel presented the judge with pictures of the woman taken at the time of the assault, her face swollen where he allegedly punched her several times. He also gave the judge a taped testimony from the woman in which she described an earlier incident when Quiring beat her, breaking her wrist and jaw. "The pictures show the brutality and savagery," Hettel said. "If that's not great bodily harm, I don't know what is." Ryan said he weighed heavily on the abuse, which left the victim with bruises to the face and body. She had to have colon surgery to repair damage caused by the broom. |
