Search of Aurora home for poison yields nothing

Police have concluded their search of the home of Steven Aubrey, the Aurora man suspected of killing his wife and then himself, without finding anything suggesting the 34-year-old had been cooking up a deadly poison.

Fear that a deadly substance was inside the townhouse on the 2500 block of Hillsboro Boulevard arose Sunday after officers found unknown chemicals and castor beans, which can be used to make ricin. The toxin can cause seizures and death within 36 to 72 hours, and there is no known antidote. After the discovery, the search was halted and officers decontaminated.

The DuPage County Bomb Squad and Aurora Fire Department Hazmat Team were called in and destroyed two batches of chemicals. Once given the all-clear, officers resumed the search Tuesday and finished late Wednesday night.

According to police reports, officers found two handguns and six long guns, including assault weapons with scopes, and numerous boxes of ammunition. In divorce documents, Aubrey's' first wife reported he was an avid gun collector.

In a news release, police theorized that Aubrey planned to use the guns to ambush officers who would want to question him about his wife's disappearance.

Police also found in the home steroids that may have been used by the part-time stripper and bodybuilder.

FBI officials later this week expect to finish analyzing the castor beans to determine if they were being used to make poison or something more innocent, like castor oil. So far, there are no indications that Aubrey, a former Yorkville High School student, was trying to extract the deadly poison from the beans, said Dan Ferrelli, Aurora police spokesman. Police did not find writings detailing any type of grievance with anyone or any association with an extremist group, Ferrelli said.

Police believe the motive for the murder was ongoing domestic problems, but police don't believe the murder took place in the couple's townhouse. The search revealed no clues as to where 25-year-old Erica Aubrey may have died, police said.

Her body was found Aug. 27 buried behind a burned out home the couple used to own in Marseilles about 8 miles from Ottawa. The Kendall County coroner reported she was strangled.

Aurora police said they are continuing to investigate Erica Aubrey's death but said chances of finding the murder site are slim, considering the approximately 51 miles between the townhouse and her shallow grave. Police became involved on Aug. 26, when Erica Aubrey's father called police saying his daughter had not reported to work. Steven Aubrey initially agreed to let police search the couple's home that morning, but withdrew consent before officers could finish. Police found the pair's only child, a 2-year-old boy, safely asleep in his bed.

Because of Aubrey's suspicious behavior during the search, police kept him under surveillance. He took off that afternoon on a motorcycle, ending up in LaSalle County where got in an altercation with police and then stole a car at gunpoint, according to authorities. He abandoned the car in Kendall County near routes 34 and 30 before fleeing into a cornfield. He shot at three Aurora officers who were tracking him and eventually shot and killed himself, according to police.
