PRISON DRUG BUST

A MURDERER has been caught smuggling mobile phones and drugs into jail after doing gardening duties.

Lifer Kevin Maxwell was supposed to be tending to weeds in the grounds of Edinburgh's Saughton Prison. But a routine search found he was carrying syringe needles, a vial of anabolic steroid and two mobiles. They were thrown over the prison wall at night and were collected by Maxwell the next morning.

A prison insider said: "Being part of the garden team is a privilege not many people get when they are inside. He was trusted but there is no danger of that happening again.

"Prison staff have a constant battle to prevent contraband getting into jails but often they are fighting a losing battle.

"Someone somewhere will be raging that he was caught."

Earlier this month, we told how a record number of mobile phones have been seized from cons held in Scots jails. Visitors have been banned from carrying phones into jails after 186 smuggled mobiles were found in just six months. This has fuelled fears of gangsters running crime empires from behind bars.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: "We do not comment on individual prisoners but we can confirm that unauthorised objects were recovered by prison staff after a search and an investigation is under way."

Maxwell was jailed in 1995 after he plunged a knife into 17-year-old John Frater's heart in an unprovoked attack in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
