Get ready for Terminator 4

Los Angeles - The Terminator will be back next year, but will California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise the movie role that made him a superstar?

Warner Bros. studios has given the green light for Terminator 4 to begin production next year, despite doubts that the movie star turned politician will be free to take on more enemies, Daily Variety reported.

After a year in development, the latest film in the hit movie franchise will return under the direction of Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines director Jonathan Mostow, the industry daily said.

Studio bosses have held talks with the Austrian-born governor of the state over his availability for the film, the daily said.

"Discussions have already occurred for him to return for an encore, but the likelihood is that it would be in a limited role," Variety said, adding that the film would likely star a new model of killer cyborg to replace the man now dubbed the "Govern-ator."

Schwarzenegger made his last major screen appearance in T-3 which was released last year shortly before he was elected Republican governor of the most populous US state in a landslide election in October.

But when the former Mr Universe bodybuilding champion announced he was running for office, he promised to give up his lucrative movie career to focus on California's dire financial problems.

Schwarzenegger was paid a record-breaking $30m for his role in the movie that cost $175m to make and raked in around $430m in ticket sales. T-4 is not expected to cost as much to produce as its last predecessor given the advances in computer generated imagery that reduce the need for elaborate special effects.

Schwarzenegger Signs for Big Money Sequels?

12/10/2005

Hollywood action man Arnold Schwarzenegger may be set to juggle his role as California Governor with a return to the big screen - he has reportedly agreed to star in two big money sequels.

The actor-turned-politician has agreed to re-team with Oscar-winning director James Cameron in a fourth Terminator installment in addition to a sequel to True Lies, according to website Moviehole.net.

Eliza Dushku, who is excited about reprising her role as Schwarzenegger's daughter in True Lies 2, says, "We all caught up. Me, Jamie Lee Curtis, Arnold, and Jim (James Cameron), to talk about True Lies 2, about a month ago in California. We're doing it. Definitely doing it. I'm revved."

And John Rosengrant, who is a special effects expert at Stan Winston Studios, confirms work on Terminator 4 is at a very early stage: "It's too early to figure out what a new Terminator would look like, or anything like that. You see the script and what spark comes from that, (talk) with the director and see what the vision is. It does no good to dream it up unless you write a treatment and try to get out there and sell it yourself."

Terminator down under

With or without Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Terminator could be heading to Australia.

Hollywood producer Andy Vajna says Terminator 4 could be shot on the Gold Coast. "We were thinking about Australia. We have been looking at the Warner Bros Studios down there but it is early days," Vajna told AAP from the set of his current film, Children of Glory, in Hungary.

"That would be probably early next year."

The Terminator was released in 1984 and was the breakthrough role for former bodybuilder Schwarzenegger. Terminator 2: Judgment Day came out in 1991, followed by Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines in 2003. The films looked at the ethical implications of machine intelligence as well as what it means to be truly human.

US company Warner Bros has slated Terminator 4 for a late 2007 release. The script has been written by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who have penned screenplays for Catwoman, Femme Fatale and The Net.

"We have the script ready and we are now looking for a director and figuring out what the next step is," said Vajna.

Little else is known about the project, and original Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger, now governor of California, is yet to commit to the project. If he does, it won't be in the title role, says Vajna.

"We would like Arnie in it as a cameo," said Vajna, who produced the Terminator 3.

"We want to go on with the Terminator and turn it into a real sci-fi picture and there is a very interesting role for Arnold if he decides he wants to do it. But I am not sure where he is with his politics and all that, we will see."

If Terminator 4 does come to Australia, it will provide a welcome boost to the local movie industry.

Vajna's film credits include the Die Hard movies, The Scarlet Letter, Judge Dredd, Medicine Man, Basic Instinct 2, Nixon and Evita.
