Steroid business leads to arrest

Fargo police are investigating a local steroids operation that already has led to a criminal charge against one man. Ryan Lee Schlinger, 24, admitted to dealing steroids after a detective confronted him June 10 at a UPS store in Fargo, according to court records.

Schlinger, a bodybuilder and former football recruit at Minnesota State University Moorhead, told Detective Mike Erbes he had three mail box addresses at local UPS stores and used them solely for his steroid business, according to court papers.

A message left Wednesday on Schlinger's phone was not returned. A Cass County prosecutor charged him June 13 with possessing anabolic steroids with the intent to deliver.

Despite the charge, Fargo police continue to investigate the case, said Sgt. Ross Renner, leader of the narcotics unit. He wouldn't say how many suspects are involved and referred all questions to the U.S. attorney's office in Fargo.

An assistant to the federal prosecutors said her office would neither confirm nor deny such an investigation.

According to records filed in Schlinger's case, Erbes used a search warrant June 9 to look inside a parcel addressed to "X-streme tan" at the UPS store at 3120 25th Ave. S. The shipment contained 78 boxes of illegal steroids with packaging in Spanish.

Erbes said the store manager identified Schlinger as the person responsible for the business name. Police arrested him the next day when he picked up the package and brought it to his car.

Inside the car was another package and three envelopes, according to court records. The box held another large quantity of steroids and $2,600 in cash, Erbes wrote in his report.

Schlinger told police he also had more than 100 vials of steroids at his Fargo apartment, 4330 10th Ave. S., Erbes wrote. Police also found $6,600 in the apartment, he wrote.

On June 15, the same UPS store received two more packages containing steroids for X-streme tan. One contained 69 boxes of Cypiotest 250; the other held 33 boxes of Testosterone Enanthate, according to court records.

Schlinger, who said he was unemployed on court papers, won the men's light heavyweight division in March 2004 at the Upper Midwest Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships in Fargo, according to The Forum archives.

In 1999, the Mandan, N.D., native was a recruit at defensive back for the MSUM football team. Former coach Ralph Micheli said Wednesday he remembered Schlinger as a player with potential who left the team after one season.
